Sunday 15 June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a day to raise awareness of elder abuse and affirm our shared responsibility to protect the rights, dignity and wellbeing of older people in our communities.
This year’s theme, “Beyond Age”, encourages us to look past stereotypes and celebrate older people for who they are – individuals with unique stories, strengths and contributions that enrich our communities. Spearheaded in Australia by COTA (Council on the Ageing), the campaign calls on us all to challenge ageism and take meaningful action to prevent elder abuse in all its forms.
Elder abuse can be physical, emotional, financial, psychological or social. It is often perpetrated by someone in a position of trust. Sadly, it remains underreported, with older women disproportionately affected.
At Doutta Galla, we remain deeply committed to fostering a safe, respectful and supportive environment for all residents. We are proud that resident surveys continue to reflect high levels of satisfaction, particularly in areas such as dignity and feeling safe – testament to the collaborative efforts of residents, families and staff.
This message is a timely reminder for us all to remain aware and vigilant. Elder abuse is a complex and serious issue and early recognition of the signs can make a real difference.
Let us use this occasion to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring older people are heard, supported and treated with the respect they deserve.
