Doutta Galla Aged Services applauds the Australian Government’s decision to bring forward the release of 20,000 Home Care Packages in early November, and another 20,000 Home Care Packages by the end of December. We believe this is a critical move that will provide much-needed support to older Australians wishing to remain living safely and independently in their own homes.
The announcement, made by the Minister for Aged Care and Seniors, the Hon Sam Rae, as part of the passage of the Aged Care and Other Legislation Amendment Bill, fast-tracks care for thousands of people on the national waiting list.
Jeremy Jones, Acting CEO of Doutta Galla, congratulated the Government on its decisive action. “We commend Minister Rae and the Government for fast-tracking these essential packages. This decision directly addresses the significant demand for home care and provides tangible relief for countless older people and their families who have been anxiously waiting for support,” said Mr Jones.
The announcement reflects the growing need for home care services that Doutta Galla witnesses firsthand in Melbourne’s western suburbs. In the last financial year, the Doutta Galla’s In-Home Services team provided extensive support to the local community, with more than 11,323 service hours delivered.
“The need for these packages is something we see every day. Our data shows a large cohort of people receiving entry-level support through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), who could greatly benefit from the more comprehensive and tailored support offered by a Home Care Package,” Mr Jones stated.
“While we have a strong foundation supporting CHSP clients, we are actively expanding our capacity to deliver high-quality, person-centred Home Care Packages. With these new packages becoming available, Doutta Galla is well-positioned to assist more individuals in our community to access this higher level of care.”
Doutta Galla views this early release as an excellent bridge to the forthcoming Support at Home program, providing immediate support while the sector prepares for the full implementation of the new, rights-based Aged Care Act.
