From wartime Britain to a tranquil retirement in Doutta Galla’s Queens Park apartments, Elizabeth’s life is a testament to resilience, independence, and the enduring power of home.
Elizabeth’s decision to enter retirement living was not made lightly.
After years of working in various roles, from kitchen duties to quality control in textiles, Elizabeth had lived a full life. Her journey began in England, where she faced the challenges of growing up and navigating a tough post-war economy. Elizabeth moved to Australia in the 1950s, where she found work and stability, eventually buying a small home in West Brunswick.
Throughout her life, Elizabeth worked diligently, often in physically demanding jobs. She valued her independence and self-reliance, traits she cultivated from a young age. This independent spirit continued even as she aged, but eventually, health concerns began to influence her daily life. Elizabeth noticed she was becoming unsteady on her feet and decided it was time to consider a change.
Elizabeth’s choice to move into Doutta Galla Retirement Living in Queens Park, Moonee Ponds, was driven by her practical nature and advice from a close friend. “Heather, who’s about ten years older than me, said, ‘Elizabeth, when it’s time, think about it. Make sure you make the decision, not someone else,'” Elizabeth recalls. She took this advice to heart, ensuring that her move was made on her terms, while she could still manage the transition and settle comfortably into her new environment.
Elizabeth’s choice was also influenced by her beloved pets, particularly her old cat, who was part of her decision-making process. “I couldn’t move without my cat. He was very old and not going to go for much longer, but I needed him,” Elizabeth explained.
Elizabeth had been married in her forties, after meeting her husband at a friend’s birthday party. Despite initial reluctance, she eventually found companionship and love with him. “We lived in West Brunswick, where I had a little house. It wasn’t much, but it was home,” Elizabeth reminisces. Sadly, her husband passed away several years ago, leaving Elizabeth to navigate her later years alone.
The move to Doutta Galla Retirement Living brought Elizabeth peace of mind. “I love that it’s all green here,” Elizabeth says, “even the streets are green. It’s a beautiful area.”
Elizabeth appreciates the blend of independence and support, allowing her to maintain her autonomy while having help nearby if needed. “I knew I needed a place I could afford without taking a loan. This place is perfect; it’s within walking distance to everything I need,” she shares.
Now, Elizabeth enjoys the community’s amenities and the nearby parks, reflecting on her life with satisfaction and gratitude. Her decision to move was not just about practicality; it was about embracing a new chapter with dignity and grace, surrounded by the comforts of a supportive community. “I’m very glad I made this decision. It’s a lovely place to live,” Elizabeth concludes.
