This week, Doutta Galla Aged Services welcomed John Kemsley as our new Chief Client Officer. John’s appointment marks an important step for our organisation, and his career offers a clear sense of the experience and focus he brings.
John began his nursing career more than 30 years ago in intensive and coronary care. Early on, he witnessed a milestone in Australian healthcare. “I was very fortunate to be at Australia’s first heart transplant with Fiona Coote and the lovely Victor Chang back in the day,” he recalls. The experience reinforced the importance of steady leadership and respect for the people in his care.
He later moved into education, discovering a strong interest in supporting future nurses. “I love teaching, love educating the new nurses of tomorrow,” he says. He went on to lecture at university, become an associate professor, and eventually serve as Executive Director of Education at the Australian College of Nursing, contributing to national work in nursing capability and policy.
A genuine turning point came when he “took a bit of a sea change and moved to Cairns” to begin working in aged care. This was the moment, he says, when he found his long-term professional direction. At Bupa and later at St Vincent’s Care Services, he commissioned new homes, managed major residential services, and deepened his interest in improving aged care systems. “That’s where I really fell in love with aged care,” he explains.
Before joining Doutta Galla, John served as General Manager of Care Operations and Chief Nurse at Aveo Group, overseeing multidisciplinary teams and services across several states. His background in clinical governance, workforce development, and service quality will be valuable as he steps into his new role.
When asked why he chose Doutta Galla, John’s answer was simple. “There was just something about Doutta Galla that I really liked and think I can contribute a lot to where Doutta Galla is going next.”
Looking ahead, he is clear about his first priority. “Our model of care is the biggest priority, defining what best practice looks like for Doutta Galla and for the residents living in our communities.”
