Every morning at Doutta Galla’s Footscray Home, Hugo starts his day by making the rounds.
He delivers the daily newspaper to residents who subscribe, then returns later to collect finished copies and place them in the home’s newspaper nook for others to enjoy.
It is a small routine, but one that reflects Hugo’s approach to life: staying active, helping others and being part of his community.
Born in El Salvador in 1957, Hugo moved to Australia in 1985 and is a proud father of three. He spent much of his working life as a factory worker and machine repairer. In 1988, a workplace accident permanently affected his eyesight, but it did little to diminish his curiosity or desire to contribute.
Since moving to Doutta Galla Footscray in July 2024, Hugo has become an active part of life at the home.
“I love residing at Doutta Galla, Footscray,” Hugo says. “I moved here in July 2024, and the transition was incredibly smooth, thanks to the warm and welcoming atmosphere.”
Hugo also runs the home’s weekly footy tipping competition, coordinating tips for 22 participants, and lends a hand by translating for Spanish-speaking residents who find communicating in English difficult.
His interests extend well beyond the home. Each week, Hugo attends digital literacy and Korean language classes in the community. He is also a regular visitor to Footscray Library, where he spends time reading and developing his computer skills.
For Hugo, moving into aged care hasn’t meant stepping away from the things that give life purpose. It has opened new opportunities to engage, contribute and keep learning.
“Doutta Galla offers high-quality care, has friendly and professional staff and provides a variety of activities,” Hugo says.
“Along with my fellow residents, I can confidently say that we feel very safe and comfortable here.”
