Rita Gonsalves, at 92, recently moved into Doutta Galla Aged Services’ Queens Park Home.
This isn’t the first time she’s adapted to a new environment. Born in India, she worked as an accounts assistant before emigrating to Australia with her husband in 1979.
Initially headed for Sydney to be with their daughter, a job opportunity in Melbourne changed their plans. This unexpected turn highlights Rita and her husband’s flexibility and resilience in creating a new life for themselves. “We came when we were older, we were in our fifties when we came. So it wasn’t as easy as the young ones, but we were lucky we both got jobs.”
Rita readily embraced life in Melbourne, working for many years and actively contributing to her community. “I was with Elders here for, I think 18 years.” Even after her husband’s passing six years ago, Rita maintained an active social life, frequenting a local seniors club and enjoying activities like bingo.
However, Rita eventually recognised that she needed some extra support to maintain her independence. She decided to give Doutta Galla a try. “I came here, I booked in for two weeks to try it out. How I feel, if I’d manage and things, and I stayed.”
Her initial two-week trial quickly turned into a permanent stay. She was immediately drawn to the warm and welcoming atmosphere at Queens Park. “They’re all very nice,” she shares, referring to the staff. “Always ready to help you. If you need something, just say you need something.” She also appreciates the cleanliness and the freedom she has. “Everything is so clean too, very nice.”
Rita’s positive experience at Doutta Galla Queens Park has reinforced her belief in staying active and engaged in life. “Just keep active. Keep active, keep going, keep doing. Help as much as you can, whoever you can, whenever you can.” Her advice to others considering aged care reflects this philosophy: “Do it before it is too late. Do it while you can; you’d be very happy here.”
Rita’s story clearly illustrates how aged care can provide a supportive and enriching environment for seniors. At Doutta Galla Queens Park, she has found a place where she can continue to live a full and active life, surrounded by a caring community and with access to the support she needs.
